To Our Customers and the Pet Owner Community,
I want to sincerely apologize for the pain, fear, and uncertainty that the avian flu outbreak and
our response to it caused many families. Pet owners trust us to provide safe food for animals that
are beloved members of their families, and I recognize the heartbreak that comes with losing a
companion.
Over the past year, we have listened carefully to the concerns, criticism, and experiences shared
by customers, retailers, and members of the broader pet community. I deeply regret that our
response during this difficult and unprecedented situation did not meet the level of compassion,
transparency, and responsibility that people expected from us.
We take this matter seriously and are committed to doing better moving forward.
Since these events occurred, we have strengthened our food safety and risk-reduction practices.
This has included expanding use of High Pressure Processing (HPP), additional reviews of
ingredient sourcing and handling standards, expanded consultation with food safety specialists,
and providing broader offerings of cooked feeding options for customers who prefer them. We
are also reevaluating how we communicate potential risks and safety information so pet owners
can make informed decisions with as much clarity as possible.
We understand that trust is earned through actions, not statements. Rebuilding that trust will
require consistency, transparency, and accountability over time, and that is the commitment we
are making to our customers and retail partners.
